How I Finally Smell Good All Day: A Women’s Hygiene Routine No One Teaches Us

Postpartum hormones can change everything — including how our bodies smell. After having kids, I noticed that even when I showered regularly, I didn’t always feel fresh throughout the day. What I eventually realized is that most women are never actually taught how to properly clean their bodies or how scent layering works.

This routine has completely changed how I feel in my body. I stay fresh all day long, my skin is healthier, and my scent lasts. I’m sharing this routine in detail because I know I’m not the only one who has struggled with this.

Tools I Use in the Shower

Using the right tools is just as important as the products themselves.

  • African exfoliating net cloth (antibacterial and exfoliating)

  • Non-damaging shower hooks (to allow proper drying)

  • Exfoliating mitt (used once a week for sensitive skin)

The African net cloth dries quickly, doesn’t trap bacteria like traditional loofahs, and exfoliates gently when used properly. Always hang it to dry after use.

Full Shower Routine (Top to Bottom)

Face First

I always start with washing my face so oils, makeup, and skincare residue don’t rinse down onto my freshly cleaned body.

Hair Washing Routine (Double Cleanse Method)

I double wash my hair every time I shower.

First wash:

  • Dispense shampoo into your hands

  • Add a small amount of water and emulsify

  • Focus only on the scalp and roots

  • This loosens oil, sweat, and buildup

Rinse thoroughly.

Second wash:

  • Repeat the shampoo, again focusing only on the scalp

  • This wash actually cleans the hair and scalp

I do not scrub my ends. The shampoo rinsing through is enough to cleanse them.

Conditioner and Hair Mask

After rinsing shampoo:

  • Gently squeeze excess water from hair

  • Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends only

  • Finger-comb through hair (or use a wide-tooth comb)

  • Squish the conditioner into the hair and let sit for about one minute

A few times a week, I use a hair mask instead of conditioner:

  • Apply using the same technique

  • Clip hair up using a claw clip

  • Leave in for five to ten minutes

As a busy mom, shower time is one thing I do not rush. This is my personal self-care time.

Body Washing Routine (Where Scent Begins)

Your products should all fall within a similar scent profile so they layer well. I prefer warm scents like shea butter, vanilla, coconut, and sandalwood.

First Body Wash

  • Use a bar soap to remove sweat, deodorant, and buildup

  • Lather soap on your cloth or net

  • Wash your entire body, including feet

  • Rinse thoroughly

Second Body Wash

  • Repeat the wash using the same bar soap

  • This wash actually cleans the skin

Exfoliation (Once Per Week)

On exfoliation days, I use a gentle body scrub at this stage. Exfoliating before shaving helps prevent ingrown hairs and allows for a closer shave.

Shaving

Apply shaving gel after exfoliating and shave as usual.

Final Body Wash

My final wash is always a moisturizing body wash to add hydration and another layer of scent.

Feminine Hygiene

Use a gentle, pH-balanced wash externally only. Never wash internally.

After the Shower: Locking in Freshness

After showering, I wrap my hair in a microfiber towel while I complete my body care routine.

Odor-Prone Area Care

Using witch hazel on a cotton pad, I clean:

  • Behind ears

  • Behind neck

  • Belly button

  • Armpits

  • Under breasts

  • Any areas where sweat tends to build up

Allow the skin to dry completely.

Lotion and Oil Layering

  • Apply body lotion first

  • Follow with a matching body oil to seal in moisture and scent

This step is crucial for long-lasting freshness.

Dusting Powder

  • Apply dusting powder using a puff

  • Let it sit while getting dressed

  • Gently dust off excess

This helps absorb moisture, reduce sweat, and lock in scent.

Deodorant and Perfume

I finish with:

  • Deodorant in the same scent family

  • A warm vanilla-based perfume applied to pulse points

This final layer helps the scent last all day.

Why This Routine Works

  • Double cleansing removes odor-causing buildup

  • Proper exfoliation prevents bacteria from lingering

  • Moisturized skin holds scent longer

  • Layering products in the same scent family increases longevity

This routine has become something I genuinely look forward to. Feeling clean and confident makes a huge difference in daily life.
