A Celiac’s Honest Wedding Experience

Yesterday, I attended a wedding at The Lake House in beautiful Niagara. As someone living with celiac disease, there’s always a layer of anxiety that comes with dining out — especially at weddings where you don’t control the menu.

When I first looked at the menu, I noticed only a few “gluten-friendly” options listed. As we know, “gluten-friendly” doesn’t always mean celiac safe, so I made sure to speak with my server. She was wonderful — kind, knowledgeable, and clearly understood cross-contamination risks. That alone helped me relax and enjoy the evening a little more.

Appetizers

When the appetizers came around, I wasn’t able to have any of the shared platters. They looked amazing — flatbreads, hummus, dips, and calamari — but unfortunately none of those were prepared gluten-free for the group. However, I did notice that The Lake House actually offers gluten-free flatbread on their regular menu, which is such a nice option for anyone dining there individually.

Since I couldn’t safely enjoy the shared starters, I decided to order something separate and went with the beet and goat cheese salad. It was delicious! The beets were whole, the goat cheese creamy and tangy, and the candied pecans added the perfect crunch. It was a generous portion and felt like a treat, not a compromise.

Main Course

For my main, I ordered the Pollo Penne — a creamy gluten-free pasta dish. The sauce was rich, flavorful, and comforting. The pasta itself was cooked perfectly (which isn’t always easy with gluten-free pasta!).

Dessert

To finish off the evening, I enjoyed a mini Nutella mousse. It was light, sweet, and the perfect way to end the meal.

Final Thoughts

I left the wedding feeling satisfied, happy, and most importantly — not glutened! The staff at The Lake House were incredibly accommodating, and the food was fantastic. If you’re a celiac planning to dine there, I highly recommend speaking with your server ahead of time. My experience was a total win — delicious food, beautiful venue, and zero gluten aftermath!
